Adult
Keelboat Sailing, Malahide Coastline
|
Adult
small boat sailing scheme on the keelboat
Backman 21 restarts at the end of April.
Due to the strange weather we've been
having this month, we've been delayed a
number of weeks getting out on the backman.
(refer to side bar for more information on
understanding the weather and why it
affects the decision to go out on the
water). Now that the weather is warming a
little, we're looking forward to trips in
the water around Lambay Island or
Irelands' Eye. See full details on our Sailing
page.

| Understanding
the Weather |
|
|
When taking to the water, the 4 key
elements to identify when looking at
the weather forecast are: Wind
Strength; Wind Direction; Air
Temperature; and Visibility.
The sea conditions will be dictated by
a combination of wind strength and
wind direction. Winds from the land
provide flatter water for powerboating
and keelboat sailing, but may make it
difficult for windsurfers and dinghy
sailors to get back.
A maximum wind strength of force 4 is
advisable while you build experience
and get to know your area.
The air temperature will tell you the
kind of personal equipment you should
be wearing for the activity.
The visibility will let you know if
you might have problems find your way
or running into obstacles or other
boat.
The key areas to get information on
the weather forecast are television
weather reports, on the internet at www.met.ie/forecasts/sea-area.asp
and radio reports (each day hear the sea
area forecast on RTE Radio 1).
